Reflections on the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election

By Mike Singh

November 6, 2024

On the night of November 5, 2024, President Trump’s victory brought tears to my eyes. It was a powerful reminder of another election night decades ago, when I was a teenager in socialist Guyana, and Ronald Reagan won the U.S. presidency in 1980. For me and many others, Reagan’s victory was a glimmer of hope, a belief that there was a path beyond the struggles of hard-core socialism.

Reflecting on the challenges I faced in Guyana back then, President Trump’s recent victory feels like a reprieve from what I view as a turbulent period under the Biden-Harris administration. I see it as the end of a socialist nightmare marked by increasing pressures such as inflation, divisive DEI policies, cultural shifts, and an overreach in governmental power. For someone who left Guyana in search of the freedoms and opportunities the United States offers, I feel that Trump’s leadership is a step toward safeguarding the values that attracted me—and countless other immigrants—to these shores.

As a proud and grateful immigrant, I am thankful for everything this nation has provided for my family and me. I have found opportunity, security, and a sense of purpose here. And I know that I am not alone; thousands of Guyanese immigrants share my appreciation for the blessings of being a part of the American story.

I believe that a secure, prosperous, and stable United States is essential for its people and the world. A resilient U.S. economy, a culture of innovation, and the country’s standing as a beacon of freedom are crucial for global stability and peace. Like millions of law-abiding, hardworking Americans, I want a nation that stands tall, united under God, with liberty and justice for all.

May God bless America and guide its future.
