As a Senior Associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a fellow with the Caribbean Policy Consortium and Global Americans, and a trailblazer who introduced the concept of Geonarcotics, Professor Ivelaw Lloyd Griffith has significantly contributed to our understanding of the complex interplay between drugs, geography, power, and politics.
His academic works, including “Strategy and Security in the Caribbean,” “The Quest for Security in the Caribbean,” and the insightful “Challenged Sovereignty,” have been pivotal in shaping the discourse on Caribbean security and sovereignty. His research has influenced academic thought and informed policy-making, earning him prestigious recognitions like the Dr. William J. Perry Award and the Cacique Crown of Honor.
Professor Griffith’s distinguished career, leading institutions such as the University of Guyana and Fort Valley State University, and his tenure as the former Provost of York College, CUNY, reflect his unwavering dedication to Caribbean development and security. His voice, echoing through the halls of Congress and various media outlets, has been instrumental in advocating for the region’s progress.
As we reflected on the pressing issues facing the Caribbean, Professor Griffith’s expertise provided us with invaluable perspectives on the challenges to sovereignty and security. His presence and guidance were especially poignant as we considered the dire situation in Haiti and the broader implications for the region.
