Caribbean and US intensify cooperation – Docblot Suriname

 

On June 14, Vice President Harris’ Office sent a letter to CARICOM instructing them to establish three committees. CARICOM and the Dominican Republic were also asked to appoint three members to the committees. CARICOM appointed their representatives to the committees within two days.

 

Three groups:

1) Energy Commission

2) Food Safety Authority

3) Commission for Finance.

 

CARICOM has appointed the following persons as Co-Chairs: Prime Minister Keith Rowley (Trinidad & Tobago) for Energy, President Irfan Ali (Guyana) for Food Security and Prime Minister Mia Motley (Barbados) for Finance. Each of them was assigned a replacement. The Dominican Republic has also appointed its representatives.

Amid the global push towards renewable energy, Suriname is determined not to be left behind and its President, Chandrikapersad Santokhi last week stated that they will use the proceeds from their oil resources to fund the transition to renewables. The Surinamese President made the remarks during his feature address at the opening ceremony of the Suriname Oil and Gas Energy Conference (SOGEC) which was held in Paramaribo, Suriname.

Stabroek News reports Venezuela will begin supplying several CARICOM countries with oil as regional heads have agreed to resume the PetroCaribe agreement and have called for the end to U.S. sanctions that brought it to an end, says Ralph Gonsalves, the Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
